Hans Memling in contemporary art

from 04/04/2020 to 06/09/2020

Hans Memling in contemporary art.

Hans Memling was one of the most significant painters of the Burgundian Bruges genre. He painted three altarpieces for the medieval Sint-Janshospitaal. These are considered to be masterpieces amongst the artwork of the Flemish primitives. The world-renowned Ursula Shrine is also one of his works. Hans Memling is a source of inspiration for various contemporary artists and this Bruges exhibition highlights his influences for the first time. As well as a range of portraits by Joseph Kosuth – one of the forefathers of conceptual art – there will also be works on display by African-American painter Kehinde Wiley (who painted an official portrait of Barack Obama) and Syrian-American artist Diana Al-Hadid. Belgian artist David Claerbout will also be creating a new piece of work for this project.
